At this point I'm going to stop trying to dissect the issue and just say that if I like someone's music, she/he is an influence.

I'm pretty sure I was still in the throes of heavy metal and glam rock in 1990.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with McMurtry's music in that it's the kind of music I'd love to write but know I never will. Such is life. And I'm still kicking myself for missing his show when he played locally last year.

His distinct lack of commercialism is probably what does it the most for me. There's a truth, a purity, to his music. And while I still listen to Megadeth and Skid Row without apology, their influence and inspiration is at best minimal.

I think there's more to influence than comparison, and that being said, find influence and favorite to intermingle far too often to consider them mutually exclusive.

Comment on Songwriting: inspiration or perspiration? by Fred

It's confession time, Dick. Although I've had few opportunities to join a songwriters' group, I admit that I've been a little apprehensive. As I told you, I've been kicked around by mostly well-meaning people in college fiction courses, but songwriting is a fairly recent pursuit (a little less than 5 years.) My two younger brothers, Malcolm, www.mjmckinney.com, and Todd, www.cdbaby.com/artist/toddmckinney (don't know why these won't show as links) have been writing songs and singing since the 60's and I've been intimidated by their abilities, and I'm a little sensitive about risking criticism, though the EYMC group is very supportive of all members' work.

My mentor and songwriting coach, Bob Cox of Willard, OH, advised me early on to study songs I like, both for words and music, but I'm too lazy to do that in a detailed manner. I'm willing to listen over and over, but not to take notes. And I've been leary of "trying" to write pop or commercial stuff. So, while I certainly respect anyone who can make a living writing songs, I also steer away from "aiming" at a certain market. The result is my songs are all over the place relative to what they're "about", though styles and chord progressions are similar. I write songs mostly about things I'm interested in and that I can sing myself.
